Project

Just a few kilometers from Kibera at Kerarapon, off Ngong Road is a small house and classroom that serves as a drop in centre for street children from the slum. It was here in the turquoise classroom of ‘Ndugu Mdogo’ that British Artist David Fulford ran a two-week series of workshops in photography and drawing for 21 of the street boys, aged 7 to 14, who regularly attended the drop in centre.

The workshop focused on 'Self-Portrait'. Using photography and drawing the boys where encouraged to consider various elements that constitute a Self Portrait; the people, objects and surroundings that define an individual in their environment. Using simple 'point-and-shoot' disposable cameras, the boys then left the classroom, with an idea to collect images that would in some way define themselves.

The workshop was hosted by the Koinonia Community Kenya, a charitable organization that works in
the local communities to help and protect the many children who live on the streets of Nairobi.
